ADU (Apartment)
The ADU living area (above) and Kitchen (below) are all in one big "great" room. The living room window is bumped old to hold a small couch (in this case its holding a bean bag chair), and just to the right of the window is an alcove for a desk (not visible). The majority of the kitchen sits in a bump out into the side yard, which allowed us to put a good size skylight in it.
An ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) is a term implying a small dwelling that is contained within a single family household. Ours is a one bedroom apartment of about six hundred square feet that occupies the north half of the main floor of our house. Our selfish reasons for building an ADU was to have someone living in the house all the time so we could travel, but we also liked the idea of creating additional living space in the city.
The ADU was also a chance to work with lower cost, but still environmentally friendly materials.
