Other Salvage Materials
We built this bookcase out of the remaining good spare trim pieces plus one sheet of plywood (above). We found a matching pair of stained glass windows, designed a pattern to join them and had them put together (upper right). The attic hallway lines up with the exterior window, so put in a re-light that we got from the salvage store (lower right).
In building the bookcase, we thought we were going to have to finger joint some pieces, but by pairing long pieces with short ones, we felt biscuit joining was strong enough. We did have to buy a couple of new pieces because our remaining pile is one really short or really marred pieces, which wouldn't have fit in with the rest of the wood.
We bought the two stained glass windows thinking that joining them would be easy, but like every other project that seems easy, it required days of design time. Luckily the painter's helper was an art school grad who had done stained glass, and so we exchanged photoshop images by email until we had a design we both liked, and then he did the work.
The re-light was the one re-use project that was effortless. We did nothing to the window but screw it in, since the back side of it was to unfinished space, it didn't have to be pretty.
